Wool/Fiber (care & harvest)

Dirty wool with debris is of no value for spinning. Brushing, blowing and combing should be practiced before shearing the fiber from the llama. Have a clean floor free from hay and debris.

We use a clean carpet and it lays flat. In a stall or a llama chute try to gather the fiber before it falls to the ground then put in a clean container to save as needed. Moisture will accumulate in a sealed plastic bag which would spoil the fiber. Remember it takes about 2 years for the llama wool to grow back. I would not shear to the skin, cuts and scratches will occur after rolling in the dirt. Sunburn to the skin is something to think about too.
